Job description

The Ocean Cleanup’s river engineering team is looking for a work student with CAD skills. In this role, you will support our River Engineers by developing and updating 2D technical drawings for The Ocean Cleanup's river deployments using Autodesk AutoCAD Map3D. The General Arrangement drawings on scale are used to illustrate new deployment designs showing the configuration of the technology in a targeted location in a specific river. Your task would be to prepare these sets of drawings by combining geographical information from Google Earth, bathymetry maps, and accurate drone shots from the field, tracing contours of all relevant information into one clear overview. Our office facilitates a CAD PC, and lunch is provided free of charge.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Create and update 2D CAD drawings for river-based interception technologies.
  • Develop survey layouts and technical schematics using drone imagery or manual drafting.
  • Collaborate with engineers to ensure drawings meet project requirements.
Required Skills:
  • Competent in Autodesk AutoCAD Map3D.
  • Ability to assign coordinate systems, manage layers, draft polylines and curves, apply hatching, and handle external references (e.g., drone images, drawings, PDFs).
  • Experience with plotting technical drawings.
Bonus Skills:
  • Graphical design skills to help visualize concepts (Inventor or similar software).
  • A "marine minded" approach with an understanding of water behavior and the dynamics of river environments.

As part of this role, you will be expected to follow the existing drafting manual and contribute to its improvement over time. The improvement process will occur gradually, in alignment with the completion of everyday tasks and the evolving needs of the projects. Your contributions to the manual will ensure it reflects the latest project requirements and feedback from the team. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to work with various professionals, including surveyors, data engineers, project managers, and department leads, promoting communication and collaboration across disciplines.
We are looking for someone with strong technical abilities and a proven understanding of CAD tools. Ideally, you are "marine minded," with an understanding of water behavior, and can work autonomously while also being an excellent communicator, fostering collaboration with colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
